5 Essential Madinina Kiss Items to Keep Your Skin Hydrated to Get That Gorgeous Winter Glow.

After Fall comes Winter!!!! Now What? Between Dry Skin and Dry Hair, keeping our skin and hair moisturized seems to be a challenge.  In my blog Why We Need to Exfoliate, I talked about how to transition from Summer Skin Care into a Fall Skin Care Regime.  I talked about the benefits of sugar body scrubs, Shea Butter and Cocoa Butter as your go-to moisture “Super-Heroes”

As the leaves change in fall, you may notice changes in your skin as well. You can easily develop rough, dry, and itchy skin during the colder months, especially if you live in an area where you’re exposed to cold, dry air and harsh winds.  This is why Madinina Kiss created its natural skin care line to help combat the seasonal changes that cause dry itchy skin.

In this blog, I want to really dive into why you may have dry skin in the winter, and then some suggested steps to prevent it from becoming a seasonal problem.

8 Reasons for Seasonal Dry Skin

First, understand why you may have dry skin in winter, and then take steps to prevent it from becoming a seasonal problem.

  1. Cold, dry air. Cold air has less moisture than warm or hot air. “Cold air can be intensely drying,” Dr. Banks says. To keep winter air from drying out your skin, apply a moisturizer daily. Moisturizers work by locking water into your skin’s top layer, so apply after bathing, while skin is still damp. During winter, a heavier lotion or cream can help your skin retain moisture longer, especially for rough or extra dry areas.
  2. Harsh winds. Strong winter winds can strip your skin of its natural lipids, which are the most important part of the skin barrier and keep skin from drying out. Cover up to protect against the wind by wearing a hat and a scarf, and apply a moisturizer with sunscreen before heading outdoors. Don’t forget your sunglasses, Banks says, which help protect the delicate skin around your eyes.
  3. Home, hot home. The heat in your house, especially if it’s a forced- air system, can be drying as well. To overcome this problem, use a humidifier to add moisture back into the air. If you don’t want to install a whole-house humidifier, at least consider a unit for your bedroom, and sleep with the door closed so the moist air doesn’t escape.
  4. A toasty fire. It may be awfully inviting to sit by a fireplace on a cold winter’s day, but “the heat from the toasty fire also can toast your skin,” Banks says. “Dead skin builds up quicker in dry heat.” To help prevent dry skin in winter, don’t light a fire — or at least stay farther away from its glow, and limit your time sitting by the fire.
  5. Hot showers and baths. “A hot shower can feel great when you’ve been out in the cold, dry air all day,” Banks says, “but it is actually very bad for your skin.” To prevent your skin from becoming dry, use lukewarm rather than hot water. When you shower, don’t make it a long one — aim for a maximum of 10 minutes. If you take a bath, adding a few drops of lavender or almond oil or colloidal (finely ground) oatmeal to the water can help soothe your skin. Your bathing products can make a difference, too. Don’t cleanse with products that can dry the skin, such as highly alkaline and detergent soaps. Then, “use your moisturizer within a minute or so of getting out of a shower or bath, as damp skin traps the water and locks in moisture,” Banks adds.
  6. Hot drinks. On a cold winter’s day, who doesn’t feel like warming up with a cup of hot coffee, hot chocolate, or even a hot toddy? However, coffee and chocolate contain caffeine, and “caffeine can dry your skin from the inside,” Banks says. And if you’re drinking a hot toddy, be aware that alcohol is a diuretic and has a dehydrating effect on your body, too. Instead, aim to add moisture to your skin from the inside as well as the outside. “It’s important to drink lots of water and stay hydrated,” Banks says. “For each cup of caffeine or glass of wine you drink, make sure you drink at least one glass of water.” Even better, replace your coffee or hot chocolate with a mug of chamomile or another herbal tea, which doesn’t contain caffeine.
  7. Winter clothing. That wool sweater grandma knitted for you may be cozy, but it can cause irritation and leave you with itchy skin. Choose clothing made of soft fabrics like cotton or silk instead. If you need to wear a wool sweater for warmth, layer it over a shirt made of cotton or silk so that it doesn’t rub against your skin. If you have sensitive skin, use mild, unscented, hypoallergenic laundry detergents and avoid fabric softener when washing your clothes and linens.
  8. The sun. Most people know the sun can damage skin in the summer when it’s the strongest, but winter sun can be just as damaging… “Even if you can’t feel the heat of the sun, the ultraviolet (UV) rays are still present, and therefore you’re still at risk for sun damage.” Always apply a natural sunscreen, like coconut oil, if you’re going outside in the daytime, even when the temperatures are near or below freezing. Use sunscreen on any exposed areas, especially your lips, with SPF 30 or above. “Even if it’s cold and windy, you still sweat, so remember to reapply sunscreen,” Banks says.

The winter winds and cold temperatures can do a number on your skin. But you can prevent your skin from getting dry, itchy, and damaged if you moisturize regularly, wear protective clothing and sunscreen, and take other smart precautions.

No need to fear! Madinina Kiss is here to the rescue!  Our line of natural skin care line provides the perfect solution to seasonal skin woes.

Here are the 5 Essential Madinina Kiss Items that will keep your skin hydrated.

1.Brown Sugar Body Scrubs

sugar-scrub-1

A natural humectant, brown sugar is known for drawing moisture out of the environment and depositing it into your skin. Our Brown Sugar Scrubs are a perfect exfoliant and will help you retain moisture in your skin during Fall/Winter season. Why is that, you ask?  Brown Sugar contains a natural glycolic acid—an essential component of alpha hydroxy acid family, making it a natural exfoliator for breaking down & removing dead skin cells.

2. Body Butter

4oz_shea-butter-blend-6593

The body butter is a nutrient dense cream used to hydrate the skin. There are various types of body butter such as shea butter, cocoa butter, mango, and kukui nut. Shea butter comes from the African shea nut tree. Cocoa butter comes directly from the cocoa seeds. Many pregnant women apply cocoa butter to their growing bellies to prevent stretch marks. Mango butter comes from mango seeds and is loaded with extra vitamin C. Kukui body butter is derived from the Kukui tree found in Hawaii. This body butter treat is chock full of vitamins A and E.  Madinina Kiss uses only three of the four kinds of butter listed,  Shea, Cocoa, and Mango.  Our Butter Blends are made with not only the wonderful butter mentioned but also the added moisturizing oils of coconut, grapeseed, and/or olive.  We sometimes use safflower oil, for our customers who may be allergic to coconut.

3. Body Oil

8oz_lemon-fresh-6569

“Oils have a locking and protective nature,” explains REN Skincare Ambassador David Leigh Delport. “They improve cell cohesion, meaning that they can limit transepidermal water loss.”  While lotions and creams can also provide moisture, a change of formula, especially during the winter season, might be exactly what your skin needs. “The skin’s ability to retain moisture becomes compromised with time so you might apply a rich moisturizer and still feel dry,” says Tatcha founder Vicky Tsai. “A good beauty oil is formulated to seal in moisture and humectants.”  Madinina Kiss Body Oils offers four kinds of oil blends, formulated to not only hydrate but have an aromatherapeutic scent so you can “smell good”.

4. Hair Butter Cream

8oz_hair-butter-cream-6595

Moisture is essential for great natural coils and curls. When your hair feels a bit rough, and dry and looks that way too, this is the jar to reach for. Part of the Kiss Me Nature “Madinina” Hair Care System™, this Conditioning Butter Cream is a rich emollient blend, graced with the finest array of natural butter and organic oils. It gets the job done.  Our hair butter is made with Shea Butter, Coconut Oil, Neem Oil and Avocado oil to give you the maximum moisturizer for your hair.

5. Dead Sea Salt

If you want to make your body go through that perfect healing and cleaning experience, go ahead and start using a Dead Sea salt scrub.  Your skin is the first line of defense, therefore we need to make sure Madinina Kiss use only NATURAL products for our skin protectant products.

Transitioning from Cosmetic to Natural Deodorant

  1. Since I started my true journey toward better health from the inside out AND the outside in, I’ve been going through all of my beauty products and eliminating toxic ingredients; things that are bad for me and the environment. I looked at the label on my cosmetic deodorant at home and was shocked. It was jam-packed full of harmful ingredients.

Perspiration (a natural and healthy body function) has almost no odor, but the bacteria that breaks sweat down into acids does—which is why most days, most of us reach for the deodorant.  Sweating is your body’s natural way of ridding toxins.  For years now I’d been hearing about possible links between the chemicals used in antiperspirants and deodorants and diseases such as breast cancer and Alzheimer’s. Unfortunately, most deodorants on the market are made with toxic ingredients that are hazardous to our health.

What sort of toxic chemicals lurks in your antiperspirants and deodorants? Plenty. The Breast Cancer Fund (BCF) reports that the following common ingredients in these products may cause cancer:

  • Triclosan can affect hormones and could be linked to breast cancer:
  • Phthalates are endocrine disruptors, which interfere with the body’s hormone function and also are linked to breast cancer, although the studies have only fueled controversy, and
  • Parabens have been found in breast cancer biopsies and are known to be absorbed into the skin. They also disrupt hormones and mimic natural estrogens, a cause of breast cancer. But these are not the only controversial compounds found in deodorants and antiperspirants. They can also include:

Most of these chemicals have not been adequately studied for either toxicity or their possible links to breast cancer, but adding up the possible toxins is overwhelming. It may be time for an armpit cleanse!

Read BCF’s articles, “Chemicals in Cosmetics” and “Endocrine Disrupting Compounds,” to learn more.

Breast cancer has long been a problem for American women, but recently it’s gotten even worse. The American Cancer Society report, “Breast Cancer Facts & Figures 2013-2014 (PDF),” states that in 2013, over 39,000 women in the U.S. “were expected to die from breast cancer. Only lung cancer accounts for more cancer deaths in women.” Could an armpit cleanse reduce your chances of breast cancer?

What Can you Do To Remove Toxic Underarm Deodorants and Antiperspirants From Your Body?

First of all, it’s important to know that these are two different types of products. Deodorants remove the odor of sweat, but antiperspirants reduce sweating in the first place. Sweat is a healthy physical response to exertion that prevents you from overheating. It also may release toxins and may even fight off colds and infections. Eliminating sweat will cause you more harm than good and may even contribute to causing breast cancer. So whatever you decide to do, I recommend replacing that antiperspirant right away.

Now that I have all of this information, what should I do to help prevent Breast Cancer?

Based on the possible causes of Breast Cancer Studies,  I created my own homemade DIY deodorant recipe. It had to be effective, yet gentle, and (of course) non-toxic.  But first, the transition.

How to Transition from Cosmetic Deodorant to Natural Deodorant

Armpit Cleanse: One Way to Make Strides Against of Breast Cancer

What is an armpit cleanse? It’s more than just changing your deodorant. It’s also a way to detox your body and help reduce your risk of breast cancer. I was introduced to the armpit cleanse two Summers by my dear friend and fellow natural skin care company CEO Rita Pardo of Naturally Me and You.  I also came across a product called Herbalix, which sells a system that contains a nighttime detox deodorant and a daytime deodorant as well. They claim to have reduced a patient’s cysts. In “Lumpy Breasts? Cure Breasts Cysts,” Neverman shares thermal imaging provided by Herbalix showing a reduction in cysts after detoxing with their product. Of course, this only helps breast cancers caused by cysts, which are a small percentage, but it’s a powerful testimony to the power of an armpit detox.  If you are going to try one, keep in mind that like other detoxes, you may have reactions.

How to Do an Armpit Cleanse

There are a few simple steps you need to take to detox and safely switch to a natural deodorant. The following four steps make up Madinina Kiss’ recommended cleanse:

Daytime Regimen

1. After you stop using your current deodorant, use a Dead Sea Salt Scrub while showering to remove dead skin and toxins from under your armpit;

2. Apply a small amount of Arm & Hammer baking soda to armpits when wet, then apply Madinina Kiss Natural Deodorant Cream. If you are sensitive to baking soda, as I am, you can mix Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay bentonite clay with apple cider vinegar and water to create a yogurt type of consistency. This is what I recommend for people who have sensitive skin; I recommend doing this at night because the bentonite clay does stain your clothing.

3. When you smell an odor coming from your armpits, wash them and then apply aluminum free baking soda. After that, apply the natural deodorant again. Or if you are sensitive to baking soda,  use the bentonite clay mixture.  If you are out and about, and you feel sweaty, apply the natural deodorant again.

4. Repeat this process for up to two weeks or until you natural deodorant works for up to 6 hours.

Nighttime Regimen

Follow Steps 1 and 2, except instead of applying the deodorant, apply our organic raw Shea Butter and allow the detoxification process to work while you sleep.  This is another one of those amazing things that nature gives us. Raw and unrefined shea butter is high in vitamins A and E and is incredibly soothing for your skin. Sounds like a good thing to put in such a vulnerable place, like your armpits, huh!?

Note that the first day you start, you may be repeating these steps 5 to 10 times, but each day, that number will go down. My own cleanse ended after the 7th day, and the average person takes 4-7 days to complete this cleanse.

You can replace deodorants and antiperspirants with Madinina Kiss Natural Deodorant Cream brand. It will keep you odor free. We also suggest during this journey, to carry an extra jar cream in your bag.

Madinina Kiss Natural Deodorant Cream and the ingredients we use.

Yeah, and there are already about a million other homemade deodorant recipes out there. And then there is Madinina Kiss.

I am proud of this deodorant because it contains a few ingredients you may not have considered would be helpful in keeping you “fresh”  or see in deodorants. But I’m ready to share it with you. It is effective, said by not only me and Oh, and it’s easy, to boot. Yay!

Coconut oil is a wonderful product to use as a base for deodorant because it kills fungi, yeast, and bacteria.

Baking soda helps to neutralize odor,

Arrowroot powder.  This is a go-to for deodorant recipes, for good reason. Actually, I always have some on hand for both food and skincare recipes. Arrowroot not only helps to serve as a thickener in this deodorant, but it also has the power to help draw out toxins. Sweet! Since when we sweat we are eliminating toxins, why not help draw them out!?

It’s that simple. And of course, we add essential oils, so that you can smell fragrant.

If you are searching for a place to purchase a good deodorant, we recommend going to Madinina Kiss where you can purchase other natural skin care products, including body butter, body oils, and body scrubs. Clicking here will give you 10% off your first purchase.

Is an armpit cleanse for you? I think it’s worth a try as part of a cleaner, non-toxic lifestyle.

The Storm Resistant Tree: Coconut

Martinique, a little French Island that sits between Dominica and St. Lucia.  The town of Trois-Ilets is where it all started for me.  A little girl from Brooklyn, NY who came to this Island of Martinique, known as Madinina, to begin on the unsuspecting journey to the evolution of Madinina Kiss, the brand.  L’Anse Mitan is where my family’s beach home is located, and where I spent every vacation time I had from school.

While I know all too well what is like to survive a Hurricane,  still the images and videos are still shocking and heartbreaking.  Even so, this video also depicts the Power of God, the God who created the Heavens and the Earth.

It is in the place that I learned about the importance of natural beauty.  On the beach house property, we have coconut trees, almond tree, papaya tree and a mango tree.  It is during my time at the beach that I learned about the goodness of the coconut tree, from its roots to its leaves.  It is in the place that my Grand-mother had me look at the coconut tree, in all its grandeur and show me how amazing it is.  I remember the year when we were told that a hurricane was coming.  The coconut tree that stood in our front yard was damaged..sort of.  There was a deep cut, right in the middle of the tree, as if someone had once attempted to unsuccessfully to cut it down.  So as we are preparing for the arrival of the hurricane, my grandmother and I looked at the tree and hoped that it would not break; because if it did, it would have caused damage to the house.

As the storm landed, I watched the tree as it swayed from left to right.  I prayed that the tree wouldn’t break.  It didn’t. It swayed, and stood up, it swayed and stood up.  The coconut tree to me became a symbol of what my life was going to be: Storm Resistant.  Madinina Kiss has weathered some storms.  But like the coconut tree, the tree that produces our favorite base oil, we are still standing.

Fall Skin Care: Why We Need To Exfoliate?

As trees start to shed their leaves, women also feel the need to shed their dry, sun-worn, and damaged summer skin. So, what better way to step into fall season than with an exhaustive Fall skin exfoliation regime?

Well, if you ask me, Founder of Madinina Kiss,  I prefer  Paradise Mango brown sugar to exfoliate and cocoa butter for moisturizing and removing the summer’s marks on my skin and making me look my best in Autumn months.

But, before we go any further into the benefits of cocoa butter and brown sugar Fall regimen for exfoliating & moisturizing, let’s see why we need to exfoliate to usher in the season change.

Why we need to slough off summer dryness?

combo

As weather changes with every new season, our skin also starts changing. With the onset of Fall, the air loses its moisture and warmth, therefore becomes cooler and drier. When this happens,  all skin types usually start drying, and the moisture levels within your skin are also reduced. As the season and weather changes, so should changes in your fall skin care routine to prevent permanently damaged skin.

So, you really need to get rid of all summer dryness with the onset of fall weather.

Madinina Kiss, a New York based natural skin care product company, brings you the benefits of organic Fall skin care regimen (brown sugar scrubs and cocoa butter) for exfoliating and moisturizing fall skin in this article:

So, keep reading for happy and smiling skin for Fall:

Coco-Lemon Face Wash System™.

To cleanse and clear dark spots or blemishes, AND moisturize your skin, assemble the following:

½ of a Lemon

1-2tsp. of Coconut oil

Hot (Very warm) washcloth

  •    Rub the lemon on your face avoiding the eye area. You may also choose to squeeze the lemon in a small bowl and use a cotton ball to apply.

(My Grand-Mother said the rind of the lemon “scrapes” the dirt off your face, a nice way of saying “exfoliating”…LOL)

  •     Leave on for a few minutes. You will begin to feel a tingling sensation.

It’s ok. It’s the fruit acid doing its job.  If it is uncomfortable, wet your hands and pat your face or if you squeezed the juice, dilute the juice with a little water.

  •    Prepare your hot towel face cloth (or very warm)
  • Rinse your face with lukewarm water, then apply the coconut oil directly onto wet skin.

  •   Apply the heated facecloth for a minute or two, then gently wipe the excess oil off.

No need to apply additional moisturizer, but if you feel you need it, apply a little more coconut oil to your face.

Do this daily for acne and blemish control. Use also to keep your skin clear and soft.

So, what are you waiting for?  Visit our online store now to purchase your very own Fall Skincare regimen products and say ‘goodbye’ to skin dryness and roughness that comes in with the season change.

My love affair with Baobab Oil

I am absolutely in love with coconut oil!!! Madinina Kiss uses coconut oil as the carrier oil for all of its products, especially my body oils.  I have to confess…I have been introduced to baobab oil.  I am going to be an adulterer.  I am not proud of the term. I am admittedly cheating on coconut oil.

So as much as it pains me to say this, yet excited at the same time, Madinina Kiss will be launching its Body Oil Collection with Baobab oil.  After careful research about the healing properties of the oil, some–not all–of our body/massage oils will be made with Baobab oil.

Before I get into baobab oil, let’s just talk about the benefits of body oils in general.  Oil has been deemed the black sheep of the beauty business because of its greasy nature.  However, the right natural oils can keep your skin moisturized, smooth, and glowing — and even fight breakouts.  Depending on the type of oil you use, it absorbs quite wonderfully into your skin.  My first love, of course, is coconut oil.  Here is why:

Intro-Natural-oils-for-body-pg-full

Coconut Oil:

Image result for coconut oil

Coconut oil is great for people with sensitive skin, eczema, and dry hair.  I recommend coconut oil, as a body moisturizer, but not everyone likes the smell of coconut oil.  So it is best to use it as a carrier oil.  As a solid, coconut oil’s creamy texture makes it the perfect light moisturizer to slather all over. The light tropical scent that lingers after it’s applied is a delight to me. There are so many other benefits to the use of coconut oil, in and out.

Baobab Oil:

See the tree below? Big, strong and Black…

BAOBAB_OIL_IMAGE_1

Regarded as the largest succulent plant in the world, the Baobab tree – [Adansonia digitata] is steeped in a wealth of mystique, legend, and superstition wherever it is found in Africa. Called the Tree of Life for its almost mythical powers, it provides food, water, shelter and traditional medicine.

The Baobab tree is found in very remote areas of South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique and other tropical African countries where suitable habitat occurs. It is restricted to hot, dry woodland on stony, well-drained soils in frost-free areas that receive low rainfall. Surrounded by the sounds and smells of the African bush, these iconic trees can live up to 2000 years and the biggest Baobab tree ever recorded has a circumference of over 43 meters.  Now that we got that out of the way…

I am going to have an affair with the oil that this tree produces.  Baobab Oil. Pure goodness from the Mother Land.  I am cheating, with Baobab Oil.  I feel guilty…not really!  Madinina Kiss will be using this oil as a carrier oil for its body oil collection.  I am so excited.  I understand that it has a nutty smell, much like my favorite butter, Shea butter, so it is going to be excited to use it.

Baobab oil is made from the fruit seeds which are extracted and air dried in the hot sun.  Madinina Kiss will use Baobab oil across the collection for its excellent softening, healing and regenerate skincare properties:

Coconut Water for the Hair?

I started this blog because I have a deep love for coconut.  I mean everything Coconut.  Now that Spring has sprung and Summer is fast approaching, it is time to start thinking about how to keep our bodies hydrated during the hot months.

Nothing says “thirst quencher” like good ‘ole fashion H2O… Nevertheless, a personal favorite alternative is Coconut water.  My favorite brand o coconut water is Vita Coco.  It si the closest thing on the market that has retained the refreshing taste of the coconut water; it’s like truly drinking it right from its natural state.

With that said, I had a conversation today with a fellow dancer (yes, I am a dancer) and she told me that she uses BOTH coconut oil AND coconut water as part of her hair care regimen…SHUT THE RONT DOOR!

See what she has to say:

I am also sharing this recipe that I found on the Vita Coco Website for a cool refreshing anytime drink:

For those of us that are beach lovers like myself, salt water is not only known to do great things for your hair (hello, texture), it’s also widely believed to be good for your skin in addition to other healing properties.  That said, a long day spent in the sea can also leave your skin feeling a bit dry and dull. As a person who spent many summer days at the family beach house, I can tell you that coconut oil was my best friend, and still is.  It acted as a water repellant leaving my sea-salt wet skin moisturized.  So the dryness and dullness others experienced, I did not.  Unlike, our pool lovers, the chemical treatment in the water is not good for the skin at all.  I would not recommend applying any natural body oil before entering the pool, but definitely immediately after.

I know that sometimes making the switch from body lotion from body oil can be challenging, especially if you see “oils” as greasy”.  And while some may still initially balk at the idea of smoothing it onto their skin after a shower or bath, beach or pool time, the benefits are undeniable, especially when you see the results first hand.

Did you know that coconut oil is a natural sunblock? Yes! It provides and SPF of about 4 which blocks 75% of UV radiation. 75% protection is about 45 minutes of sun exposure.  Madinina Kiss oils are made with coconut oil as a base oil, which seals moisture into your skin and protects the body from sunburn as long as it is used correctly., and then we add other oils such as almond, olive, jojoba, for added moisture into your skin, keeping it hydrated, fresh-looking, and protected against environmental factors including smog and other pollutants.  Madinina Kiss Oils typically prefers using coconut oil alone, but sometimes we like to switch things up and add a lightly scented mixture. And I’m not talking about the cloying, manufactured scent of store bought concoctions, but something customized, earthy, and beneficial. This is where essential oil-infused body oil comes in.

2. Pedicure. Rub a generous amount of body oil all over your feet. Put on thick cotton socks and allow the oils to soak in. (Do this before bed for extra oomph.)

3. Perfume. We know most of our customers don’t like perfumes or synthetic fragrances (we don’t either!), but if you like the subtle scent of clean citrus in our body oil, apply a few drops along pulse points for a light fragrance. 5. Frizz-buster. Place 1 or 2 drops of body oil into your hands and run lightly through the hair. (This also helps with dry ends!)

6. Deep-conditioning hair treatment.  Rub a generous amount into your hair before bed. Comb it, pile it in a loose bun on the top of your head, place a towel over your pillow, and hit the hay. In the morning , shampoo as usual and enjoy your luxurious locks!

7. Body exfoliator. Make a basic sugar scrub mixing a 2-1 ratio of sugar to body oil. Mix in a small bowl or jar. Rub gently into skin in the shower and rinse off. You won’t believe how soft your skin will feel!

8. Bath booster. Get lux in the tub by adding our unique mixture of nourishing essential oils that leave your skin feeling silky smooth.
