You can easily develop rough, dry, and itchy skin during the colder months, especially if you live in an area where you’re exposed to cold, dry air and harsh winds.  This is why Madinina Kiss created its natural skin care line to help combat the seasonal changes that cause dry itchy skin.

In this blog, I want to really dive into why you may have dry skin in the winter, and then some suggested steps to prevent it from becoming a seasonal problem.

8 Reasons for Seasonal Dry Skin

First, understand why you may have dry skin in winter, and then take steps to prevent it from becoming a seasonal problem.

  1. Cold, dry air. Cold air has less moisture than warm or hot air. “Cold air can be intensely drying,” Dr. Banks says. To keep winter air from drying out your skin, apply a moisturizer daily. Moisturizers work by locking water into your skin’s top layer, so apply after bathing, while skin is still damp. During winter, a heavier lotion or cream can help your skin retain moisture longer, especially for rough or extra dry areas.
  2. Harsh winds. Strong winter winds can strip your skin of its natural lipids, which are the most important part of the skin barrier and keep skin from drying out. Cover up to protect against the wind by wearing a hat and a scarf, and apply a moisturizer with sunscreen before heading outdoors. Don’t forget your sunglasses, Banks says, which help protect the delicate skin around your eyes.
  3. Home, hot home. The heat in your house, especially if it’s a forced- air system, can be drying as well. To overcome this problem, use a humidifier to add moisture back into the air. If you don’t want to install a whole-house humidifier, at least consider a unit for your bedroom, and sleep with the door closed so the moist air doesn’t escape.
  4. A toasty fire. It may be awfully inviting to sit by a fireplace on a cold winter’s day, but “the heat from the toasty fire also can toast your skin,” Banks says. “Dead skin builds up quicker in dry heat.” To help prevent dry skin in winter, don’t light a fire — or at least stay farther away from its glow, and limit your time sitting by the fire.
  5. Hot showers and baths. “A hot shower can feel great when you’ve been out in the cold, dry air all day,” Banks says, “but it is actually very bad for your skin.” To prevent your skin from becoming dry, use lukewarm rather than hot water. When you shower, don’t make it a long one — aim for a maximum of 10 minutes. If you take a bath, adding a few drops of lavender or almond oil or colloidal (finely ground) oatmeal to the water can help soothe your skin. Your bathing products can make a difference, too. Don’t cleanse with products that can dry the skin, such as highly alkaline and detergent soaps. Then, “use your moisturizer within a minute or so of getting out of a shower or bath, as damp skin traps the water and locks in moisture,” Banks adds.
  6. Hot drinks. On a cold winter’s day, who doesn’t feel like warming up with a cup of hot coffee, hot chocolate, or even a hot toddy? However, coffee and chocolate contain caffeine, and “caffeine can dry your skin from the inside,” Banks says. And if you’re drinking a hot toddy, be aware that alcohol is a diuretic and has a dehydrating effect on your body, too. Instead, aim to add moisture to your skin from the inside as well as the outside. “It’s important to drink lots of water and stay hydrated,” Banks says. “For each cup of caffeine or glass of wine you drink, make sure you drink at least one glass of water.” Even better, replace your coffee or hot chocolate with a mug of chamomile or another herbal tea, which doesn’t contain caffeine.
  7. Winter clothing. That wool sweater grandma knitted for you may be cozy, but it can cause irritation and leave you with itchy skin. Choose clothing made of soft fabrics like cotton or silk instead. If you need to wear a wool sweater for warmth, layer it over a shirt made of cotton or silk so that it doesn’t rub against your skin. If you have sensitive skin, use mild, unscented, hypoallergenic laundry detergents and avoid fabric softener when washing your clothes and linens.
  8. The sun. Most people know the sun can damage skin in the summer when it’s the strongest, but winter sun can be just as damaging… “Even if you can’t feel the heat of the sun, the ultraviolet (UV) rays are still present, and therefore you’re still at risk for sun damage.” Always apply a natural sunscreen, like coconut oil, if you’re going outside in the daytime, even when the temperatures are near or below freezing. Use sunscreen on any exposed areas, especially your lips, with SPF 30 or above. “Even if it’s cold and windy, you still sweat, so remember to reapply sunscreen,” Banks says.

During these fall months, consider an oil-based scrub. 3-Moisturize, Moisturize and Moisturize Every Day!

Not moisturizing your skin everyday is like not drinking water daily. 4-Put Your Skin On a Schedule

According to an article from BlackDoctor.org:”During autumn, there are great opportunities to spend quiet nights at home. Why not have a great beauty day or evening and apply a mask? If you choose an evening during the weekend to apply a hydrating mask, consider keeping that regimen for awhile. If you go and get facials, then get them on a standard day and try not to deviate if you can.”  In a DIY blog, I gave a great beauty tip using the cleansing effect of lemon and the moisturizing effect of Coconut Oil. I also suggest a DIY Moisturizing Kaolin Clay with Coconut Oil.

5-Sunscreen is Still a Must!

Summer, Spring, Winter, Fall, it doesn’t matter the Sun is still the same. Just because the air is cool, does not mean you can put away the sunscreen. Your skin still needs to be protected from the harmful rays from the sun. While a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or greater is still a great choice, I still prefer the natural SPF of coconut oil. You can add some drops of your favorite Essential Oil for your personal fragrant sunscreen.

I woke up this early August morning to a cool 69 degrees and an leaf stuck on my home office window.  Are the seasons changing already?  What are the trees shedding its leaves so early?  Is your skin prepared for this rapid change in seasons?

Healing Your Skin the Natural Way-Coconut and Shea Butter

If you believe that God created the world and everything in it or that the “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it,” then it is not wonder that we will find in nature the things that will heal our Mind, Body and Soul!

Shea butter is one of Nature’s wonders, but it is a special one. It has been used for millennia by many generations of African people for skin care, baby care, healing and food. The Shea tree is considered sacred because of the bounty of goodness it can do for your skin, hair, beauty and health.

Now with that said, combine the benefits of coconut oil and your skin will be rejuvenated from many of the most common skin ailments. Yes, I must legally inform you in part that “These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration and that my statement is “not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease”, but my personal experience and the feedback from my customers, tell me that my statements has some factual basis.

Shea butter and coconut oil are two ingredients that are commonly used in Kiss MeNature products. In fact it is the two main ingredients in our body butters, lip balms and hair care products. They are both excellent emollients and moisturizers, each has its own distinct benefits owing to antioxidants and other healing compounds. Additionally, they both act as a natural sunscreen, when applied appropriately. Despite the fact that some from the medical community may argue otherwise, as I mentioned in m earlier post, coconut oil was applied on my skin before I went to the beach. I still apply coconut oil when I visit tropical islands, and the benefits to my skin are fabulous. I will be traveling to Bali in the very near future and I intend to prepare all of my skin protectants using coconut oil and Shea butter. So let’s look at what coconut oil and Shea butter actually does for the skin:

Shea Butter

Shea butter, derived from the nuts of the Karite tree, contains fatty oils that provide intense moisturizing capability. It is rich in vitamins C and E which help to neutralize sun damage, and has been known to have anti-inflammatory properties that help treat topical skin conditions such as dermatitis.

Coconut Oil

The fatty acids in coconut oil work as a reinforcing barrier on the skin, sealing moisture in for intense, long-lasting hydration. It also contains high quantities of lauric acid, which can be used to treat viral, fungal and bacterial skin conditions like warts, athletes foot or acne.

Let’s take a deeper look as to the benefits of Shea Butter:

What makes Shea butter an extraordinary skin care and an amazing body healer is its richness in precious constituents, which include unsaturated fats with a large proportion of “unsaponifiables” components, essential fatty acids, phytosterols, vitamin E and D, provitamin A and allantoin. All these are natural and make Shea butter a superfood for your skin (and hair), but that is not all it can do for you because it is:

  • Wrinkles, fine lines and scars repairing
  • Antioxidant
  • Anti-inflammatory
  • Deeply moisturizing

Now the benefits of Coconut Oil:

More than ninety percent of coconut oil consists of saturated fats (Don’t panic! It’s not as bad as it sounds, read to the end of this review and your opinion may change), along with traces of few unsaturated fatty acids, such as monounsaturated fatty acids and polyunsaturated fatty acids. Virgin coconut oil is no different from this.

Saturated fatty acids: Most of them are medium chain triglycerides, which are supposed to assimilate well in the body’s systems. Lauric acid is the chief contributor, representing more than forty percent of the total, followed by capric acid, caprylic acid, myristic acid and palmitic.

Polyunsaturated fatty acids: Linoleic acid.

Monounsaturated fatty acids: Oleic acid.

Poly-phenols: Coconut contains Gallic acid, which is also known as phenolic acid. These polyphenols are responsible for the fragrance and the taste of coconut oil and Virgin Coconut Oil is rich in these polyphenols.

Beauty and the Coconut

As I laid on the beach in L’Anse Mitan Martinique (French West Indies), played endlessly in the salty waters of the ocean, I would look up to the skies and stare at the coconut trees and wonder “How close would I be to heaven if I climbed that tree, and how will I get down?” I was not concerned about the multitude of benefits that the coconut would offer at its various stages, but more so the water inside and the “jelly” that I would eat once the water was consumed and the green coconut was cracked opened. **The arrow points to the family beach house where I spent my summers

So I would wait for it to fall, or wait for one of the boys to brave the climb and beg for them to cut me one, much to my Grand Mother’s dismay. I didn’t care though. If I couldn’t find someone to cut one down for me, My grand-mother would tell me to “Shake the tree and see what happens…” I would shake…and nothing would come down…except, the dried coconut, that was going to fall anyway and I often hopped that it is had some water left in it. Often times it didn’t but I would take comfort in knowing that at least we could make home-made coconut ice cream.
