5 Essential Madinina Kiss Items to Keep Your Skin Hydrated to Get That Gorgeous Winter Glow.

After Fall comes Winter!!!! Now What? Between Dry Skin and Dry Hair, keeping our skin and hair moisturized seems to be a challenge.  In my blog Why We Need to Exfoliate, I talked about how to transition from Summer Skin Care into a Fall Skin Care Regime.  I talked about the benefits of sugar body scrubs, Shea Butter and Cocoa Butter as your go-to moisture “Super-Heroes”

As the leaves change in fall, you may notice changes in your skin as well. You can easily develop rough, dry, and itchy skin during the colder months, especially if you live in an area where you’re exposed to cold, dry air and harsh winds.  This is why Madinina Kiss created its natural skin care line to help combat the seasonal changes that cause dry itchy skin.

In this blog, I want to really dive into why you may have dry skin in the winter, and then some suggested steps to prevent it from becoming a seasonal problem.

8 Reasons for Seasonal Dry Skin

First, understand why you may have dry skin in winter, and then take steps to prevent it from becoming a seasonal problem.

  1. Cold, dry air. Cold air has less moisture than warm or hot air. “Cold air can be intensely drying,” Dr. Banks says. To keep winter air from drying out your skin, apply a moisturizer daily. Moisturizers work by locking water into your skin’s top layer, so apply after bathing, while skin is still damp. During winter, a heavier lotion or cream can help your skin retain moisture longer, especially for rough or extra dry areas.
  2. Harsh winds. Strong winter winds can strip your skin of its natural lipids, which are the most important part of the skin barrier and keep skin from drying out. Cover up to protect against the wind by wearing a hat and a scarf, and apply a moisturizer with sunscreen before heading outdoors. Don’t forget your sunglasses, Banks says, which help protect the delicate skin around your eyes.
  3. Home, hot home. The heat in your house, especially if it’s a forced- air system, can be drying as well. To overcome this problem, use a humidifier to add moisture back into the air. If you don’t want to install a whole-house humidifier, at least consider a unit for your bedroom, and sleep with the door closed so the moist air doesn’t escape.
  4. A toasty fire. It may be awfully inviting to sit by a fireplace on a cold winter’s day, but “the heat from the toasty fire also can toast your skin,” Banks says. “Dead skin builds up quicker in dry heat.” To help prevent dry skin in winter, don’t light a fire — or at least stay farther away from its glow, and limit your time sitting by the fire.
  5. Hot showers and baths. “A hot shower can feel great when you’ve been out in the cold, dry air all day,” Banks says, “but it is actually very bad for your skin.” To prevent your skin from becoming dry, use lukewarm rather than hot water. When you shower, don’t make it a long one — aim for a maximum of 10 minutes. If you take a bath, adding a few drops of lavender or almond oil or colloidal (finely ground) oatmeal to the water can help soothe your skin. Your bathing products can make a difference, too. Don’t cleanse with products that can dry the skin, such as highly alkaline and detergent soaps. Then, “use your moisturizer within a minute or so of getting out of a shower or bath, as damp skin traps the water and locks in moisture,” Banks adds.
  6. Hot drinks. On a cold winter’s day, who doesn’t feel like warming up with a cup of hot coffee, hot chocolate, or even a hot toddy? However, coffee and chocolate contain caffeine, and “caffeine can dry your skin from the inside,” Banks says. And if you’re drinking a hot toddy, be aware that alcohol is a diuretic and has a dehydrating effect on your body, too. Instead, aim to add moisture to your skin from the inside as well as the outside. “It’s important to drink lots of water and stay hydrated,” Banks says. “For each cup of caffeine or glass of wine you drink, make sure you drink at least one glass of water.” Even better, replace your coffee or hot chocolate with a mug of chamomile or another herbal tea, which doesn’t contain caffeine.
  7. Winter clothing. That wool sweater grandma knitted for you may be cozy, but it can cause irritation and leave you with itchy skin. Choose clothing made of soft fabrics like cotton or silk instead. If you need to wear a wool sweater for warmth, layer it over a shirt made of cotton or silk so that it doesn’t rub against your skin. If you have sensitive skin, use mild, unscented, hypoallergenic laundry detergents and avoid fabric softener when washing your clothes and linens.
  8. The sun. Most people know the sun can damage skin in the summer when it’s the strongest, but winter sun can be just as damaging… “Even if you can’t feel the heat of the sun, the ultraviolet (UV) rays are still present, and therefore you’re still at risk for sun damage.” Always apply a natural sunscreen, like coconut oil, if you’re going outside in the daytime, even when the temperatures are near or below freezing. Use sunscreen on any exposed areas, especially your lips, with SPF 30 or above. “Even if it’s cold and windy, you still sweat, so remember to reapply sunscreen,” Banks says.

The winter winds and cold temperatures can do a number on your skin. But you can prevent your skin from getting dry, itchy, and damaged if you moisturize regularly, wear protective clothing and sunscreen, and take other smart precautions.

No need to fear! Madinina Kiss is here to the rescue!  Our line of natural skin care line provides the perfect solution to seasonal skin woes.

Here are the 5 Essential Madinina Kiss Items that will keep your skin hydrated.

1.Brown Sugar Body Scrubs

sugar-scrub-1

A natural humectant, brown sugar is known for drawing moisture out of the environment and depositing it into your skin. Our Brown Sugar Scrubs are a perfect exfoliant and will help you retain moisture in your skin during Fall/Winter season. Why is that, you ask?  Brown Sugar contains a natural glycolic acid—an essential component of alpha hydroxy acid family, making it a natural exfoliator for breaking down & removing dead skin cells.

2. Body Butter

4oz_shea-butter-blend-6593

The body butter is a nutrient dense cream used to hydrate the skin. There are various types of body butter such as shea butter, cocoa butter, mango, and kukui nut. Shea butter comes from the African shea nut tree. Cocoa butter comes directly from the cocoa seeds. Many pregnant women apply cocoa butter to their growing bellies to prevent stretch marks. Mango butter comes from mango seeds and is loaded with extra vitamin C. Kukui body butter is derived from the Kukui tree found in Hawaii. This body butter treat is chock full of vitamins A and E.  Madinina Kiss uses only three of the four kinds of butter listed,  Shea, Cocoa, and Mango.  Our Butter Blends are made with not only the wonderful butter mentioned but also the added moisturizing oils of coconut, grapeseed, and/or olive.  We sometimes use safflower oil, for our customers who may be allergic to coconut.

3. Body Oil

8oz_lemon-fresh-6569

“Oils have a locking and protective nature,” explains REN Skincare Ambassador David Leigh Delport. “They improve cell cohesion, meaning that they can limit transepidermal water loss.”  While lotions and creams can also provide moisture, a change of formula, especially during the winter season, might be exactly what your skin needs. “The skin’s ability to retain moisture becomes compromised with time so you might apply a rich moisturizer and still feel dry,” says Tatcha founder Vicky Tsai. “A good beauty oil is formulated to seal in moisture and humectants.”  Madinina Kiss Body Oils offers four kinds of oil blends, formulated to not only hydrate but have an aromatherapeutic scent so you can “smell good”.

4. Hair Butter Cream

Spring Your Body Into Action

Get your body Summer Ready!!

As Madinina Kiss is entering its second quarter, we have been behind the scenes working hard to bring you- our customers and followers- another great product just in time or the warmth of the Spring and Summer.  Madinina Kiss will be re-launching its Body Oil Collection!

Beach bodies come in all shape and sizes.  It’s about health, beauty and self-love in the skin you are in.  As such we must take care of our skin, for it is the first line of defense for our temple. For those of us that are beach lovers like myself, salt water is not only known to do great things for your hair (hello, texture), it’s also widely believed to be good for your skin in addition to other healing properties.  That said, a long day spent in the sea can also leave your skin feeling a bit dry and dull. As a person who spent many summer days at the family beach house, I can tell you that coconut oil was my best friend, and still is.  It acted as a water repellant leaving my sea-salt wet skin moisturized.  So the dryness and dullness others experienced, I did not.  Unlike, our pool lovers, the chemical treatment in the water is not good for the skin at all.  I would not recommend applying any natural body oil before entering the pool, but definitely immediately after.

I know that sometimes making the switch from body lotion from body oil can be challenging, especially if you see “oils” as greasy”.  And while some may still initially balk at the idea of smoothing it onto their skin after a shower or bath, beach or pool time, the benefits are undeniable, especially when you see the results first hand.

Did you know that coconut oil is a natural sunblock? Yes! It provides and SPF of about 4 which blocks 75% of UV radiation. 75% protection is about 45 minutes of sun exposure.  Madinina Kiss oils are made with coconut oil as a base oil, which seals moisture into your skin and protects the body from sunburn as long as it is used correctly., and then we add other oils such as almond, olive, jojoba, for added moisture into your skin, keeping it hydrated, fresh-looking, and protected against environmental factors including smog and other pollutants.  Madinina Kiss Oils typically prefers using coconut oil alone, but sometimes we like to switch things up and add a lightly scented mixture. And I’m not talking about the cloying, manufactured scent of store bought concoctions, but something customized, earthy, and beneficial. This is where essential oil-infused body oil comes in.

Same Great Product, New Name

All Things Change

Change is good, but also hard if it comes as a complete surprise.  I was not ready for the change.  But change is good.  Madinina Kiss is now the new name of our company.  I wont bore you with  the details as to why we had to change the name, but I will say that it came at a time when I was excited about the progress and growth of our company.  And BAM! just like that…CHANGE happened.

Why the name Madinina Kiss

Throughout this blog, I talked a lot about my roots, more specifically my Grand-Mother who was born and raised on the Island of Martinique.  You see, before Christopher Columbus arrived, the inhabitants, the Awarak’s named the island “Madinina” which means Island of Flowers. It didn’t take me long to come up with a new name.  Looking back, it was all part of the “Great Plan.”I had already named my hair care product “Madinina Hair Care System”

What’s New???

Seasons change right? Especially now that we are transitioning for Summer to Fall. We have been working hard during the re branding to expand our product line. Known for our Shea Butter Body Butters, we have included the following to our product line: Cocoa Butter and Mango Butter. We are so excited!!!  We are also adding a nice collection of brown Sugar Body Scrubs. Simple and unique just in time for the Fall.

The Overlooked Benefits of Body Butter

Kiss Me Nature Body butters differ from lotions in that it is composed primarily of coconut oil and Shea butter.  Lotions have a high content of water.   Some lotions contain up to 70% water. While we all understand that our bodies need water, we know that if we just spread water on our skin, dryness follows shortly thereafter. Lotion tries to minimize this by adding in moisturizing properties and other ingredients. But our skin knows the difference and all too often the lotion wears off quickly and leaves us embarrassed by dry skin.  On the other hand, our body butter is composed of essential oils and nut butter. The ingredients are humectants, emollient substances that trap and lock in moisture. Our product will condition and nourish the skin. The texture itself is much thicker than lotion. When used regularly, our body butter will hydrate the skin like nothing else.

Kiss Me Nature Body Butters are a rich, luxurious treat, with a base of coconut oil, Shea butter and vitamin E. The result is skin that is visibly smoother and silky soft. We sometimes use other oils such as grapeseed oil, jojoba oil, or sweet almond oil. We also sometimes include mango butter as well.  These natural oils and butters can penetrate the surface of the skin to help nourish and condition skin. When included in your daily skin care regime, there simply is no comparison.

Why we use Unrefined Shea butter

Kiss Me Nature uses unrefined Shea butter because the raw Shea butter is in its natural state, and has been extracted manually or mechanically. It has a mild nutty-smoky scent and a golden to light ivory color.  The raw Shea butter is Kiss Me Nature’s choice of plant based ingredient because it has retained all of its precious skin moisturizing, anti-aging and healing properties. This is the only type of Shea butter we carry at Kiss Me Nature, because for us quality is a must and we do not agree with “green-washing”. Our Shea butter is organic and fair trade.

Shea Butter

Given its high content in anti-inflammatory and healing components, Shea butter helps the healing of skin disorders and problems like:

  • eczema
  • psoriasis
  • rash
  • hives
  • insect bites
  • poisonous plants contact dermatitis
  • skin cracks
  • burns
  • minor cuts

Moreover, Shea butter is deeply soothing and calming on any irritation and inflammation. Because it helps the healing of the skin, it can take care of heel and skin cracks in record time. But it does even more…

Shea butter is very beneficial for sportive men and women, as it prepares the muscles before the workout and helps them to recover faster after. It also helps to reduce muscle aches as it stimulates the elimination of toxins from the muscles.

Why We Use Coconut Oil

I started this blog a little over a year ago to talk about the benefits of coconut oil.  I am a really big fan, although not always.  In one of my blogs, Healing Your Skin the Natural Way-Coconut and Shea Butter, I wrote in depth about the properties of Shea Butter and Coconut oil combined and why Kiss Me Nature uses it in our body butters as the primary ingredients.  I have blogged on many occasions about the healing properties of Kiss Me Nature Body Butters.  I have even provided the scientific data about why Shea Butter and Coconut oil are the best ingredients for basic skin care. Here is one additional scientific fact that I did not include:

Proteins: Like coconuts themselves, coconut oil is rich in many proteins. These proteins keep skin healthy and rejuvenated, both internally and externally. Proteins also contribute to cellular health and tissue repair, along with a wide range of other essential activities within the body. For any damaged cells on or near the skin, a healthy of flow of proteins guarantees their replacement at a normal rate, whereas people with protein-deficient diets heal slower and often develop more obvious scars due to the extended healing time.  The best property of coconut oil that makes it so beneficial for skin is that it does not become rancid. When you apply it on the skin, it can work for a longer time, unlike many other oils, without it getting rancid.

Skin softener: Most of us use several creams and lotions for softening our skin, especially the skin of the face and hands. Coconut oil is a great skin softener and helps you do away with dry and hard skin conditions. Simply take some coconut oil on your palms, rub your palms against each other once or twice and then on your face, hands, or wherever you want to see the moisturizing effect.

Coconut oil is also good for hardened and cracked feet, which may happen due to excessive cold or strenuous work while standing on your feet. The cracks in your feet will not vanish, but your feet will become softer within days if you apply coconut oil to the affected area.

As an exfoliant, including coconut oil as an agent with other exfoliating or grainy materials like salts and sugars can vastly improve the effects. You will successfully scrape off excess dead skin and clean out whatever substances have blocked the pores without leaving the skin feeling irritated. The natural soothing nature of the oil combines with the grainy, exfoliating material perfectly, and leaves your skin with an even color, closed pores, and a soft texture.

5 Ways To Care For Your Fall Skin

autumn-skin-care-1

Labor Day usually signifies the end of summer fun, back to school activities, first day of school and Fall  Festivities.  In the midst of it all, we neglect our skin, as it too experiences season changes.  What was fun and worked well for the summer may not be the same for great skin care for the fall.

Here are some KISS ME NATURE skin care tips that will help you to get the best care for your skin during these Fall months:

1-Take a look at your current body wash product.

I was never a big fan of body washes other than the scent it would leave in my skin. But the drying effects were so bad, at times, even with the application of lotion, my skin was only moist for a few hours. In the summertime, I would try to rely on my bodies natural production of oil to hide my “ashy” skin, but to no avail. My face would be the only “shine” I would get.  This was the motivation behind Kiss Me Nature’s Moisturizing Coconut Body Wash and Kiss Me Nature African Black SoapBody wash. They are both soap-free and hydrating. The 4oz. Bottle is only $10.00. So pure, a little goes a long way.  So for these Fall months, consider a body wash that cleanses and moisturizes, such as these Kiss Me Nature Products.  It’s now time to put away the shower gels and bring out a creamy and moisturizing body washes.

2-Oil-Based Scrubs are THE BEST!

During these fall months, consider an oil-based scrub. I personally love coconut oil-based scrubs because they are perfect for fall and winter with great exfoliating benefits and hydrating oils.  For Fall 2015, Kiss Me Nature will introduce Coconut-Coffee Scrub. Inspired by Borika Body, Kiss Me Nature’s Coconut Coffee Scrub is a blend of Organic Coconut Flakes, Coconut Oil, Coffee, Dead Sea Salt and Lemongrass Essential Oil. In combination with a dry brushing your body, your skin will thank you.

3-Moisturize, Moisturize and Moisturize Every Day!

Not moisturizing your skin everyday is like not drinking water daily. And we all know what lack of proper hydration will do to you inside and out. Consider a Body Butter such as Kiss Me Nature’s Body Butters that are a bit heavier and allow for great hydration. Our body butters contain Shea Butter, Cocoa Butter, Coconut Oil or Grapeseed oil.  The best time to apply our body butter is right after you’ve dried off from your shower or bath. This allows you to seal in the moisture that’s already been absorbed into your skin from the water.

4-Put Your Skin On a Schedule

According to an article from BlackDoctor.org:”During autumn, there are great opportunities to spend quiet nights at home. Why not have a great beauty day or evening and apply a mask? If you choose an evening during the weekend to apply a hydrating mask, consider keeping that regimen for awhile. If you go and get facials, then get them on a standard day and try not to deviate if you can.”  In a DIY blog, I gave a great beauty tip using the cleansing effect of lemon and the moisturizing effect of Coconut Oil. I also suggest a DIY Moisturizing Kaolin Clay with Coconut Oil.

5-Sunscreen is Still a Must!

Summer, Spring, Winter, Fall, it doesn’t matter the Sun is still the same. Just because the air is cool, does not mean you can put away the sunscreen. Your skin still needs to be protected from the harmful rays from the sun. While a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or greater is still a great choice, I still prefer the natural SPF of coconut oil. You can add some drops of your favorite Essential Oil for your personal fragrant sunscreen.
